"It's about time a transvestite potter won the Turner prize' Grayson Perry
Who is Grayson Perry?
Sir Grayson Perry CBE was born in 1960 in Chelmsford, Essex. He grew up in a working-class household and while struggling with dyslexia and an unhappy domestic life he found solace in drawing, crafting and building vast imaginary worlds with his teddy bear Alan Measles.
In his teens Perry began experimenting with transvestism which would later develop into his elaborately dressed alter ego, Claire.
After attending Central Saint Martins in the 80’s Perry gained recognition as a remarkable talent.
In 2003 Perry was awarded the Turner Prize and since Perry has gone from strength to strength in his work making inciteful pieces lampooning and celebrating British culture. His work is thoughtful, fun and really rather sublime.
Grayson Perry ceramics are highly covetable, as are his tapestry-like textiles.
His work explores the faultlines in culture. Notions of class and gender in contemporary society, the stories are often told through characters, his world-building is on a personal level.
The question is perhaps not 'who is Grayson Perry?' He's rather more interested in who you are.
