Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois' "Maman" is perhaps her most famous piece.
A 30 foot tall sculpture of a spider, while it is intimidating and even scary Bourgeois never saw it as such. It represented her mother, who like a spider, was protective and a weaver.
Louise had a complicated relationship with her parents. She was close to her mother who tragically died when Louise was only twenty one years old. She was less enamoured with her father, an adulterer who never hid his disappointment that Louise was born female.
